On the train ride, Jessica grilled Amber until she finally confessed.

“I added the refugee clause to Mr. Schilling’s VIPER pledge,” Amber said sheepishly.

“You did what?”

Amber chewed a lock of hair, nodding.

“Wow!” Jessica grinned. She couldn’t believe her flighty friend had done something so bold. “I’m impressed.”

“Promise you won’t tell,” Amber pleaded.

“Now that Mr. Schilling is dead, do you think the pledge statement still holds? I mean, he wouldn’t have the refugee clause in his will or anything.” Is it right to do something wrong if it helps other people? It may be illegal, but is it immoral to want to help refugees? She struggled to reconcile what was legally right with what was ethically right. As a philosopher, she’d always had a hard time with the moral high ground.

“Those girls really need help.” Amber’s eyes shone with tears.

“Okay. I suppose it won’t hurt anyone to think Mr. Schilling was a philanthropist . . .” Jessica shook her head. All this time, she’d thought Amber had been involved in the murderers. She’d underestimated her friend. By the time the train stopped, Jessica had forgiven Amber for putting her through the last week of worrying hell.

As soon as Jessica stepped into the Parker’s cavernous lobby, an invisible hand reached inside her chest and squeezed. Nick’s smile, his cologne, his warm touch—it all came flooding back. She clamped her eyes shut to stop the tears. When she opened them again, she saw Nick at the reception desk. Her mouth fell open. “Nick?” she whispered.

“Are you okay?” Amber led her to the elevator. “Here.”

“Who is that man at the reception desk?” Jessica stood paralyzed in disbelief. Am I seeing ghosts now? He looked exactly like Nick.

“What man?” Amber rummaged in her purse and pulled out another tiny blue vial. “Calm-X. Hold these drops under your tongue for thirty seconds.” She held out the dropper.

Jessica closed her eyes and opened her mouth. She held the bitter liquid under her tongue, hoping it would chase away any spirits.

“Darlings!” A familiar voice came from behind them. “What a surprise.” Lolita gave them each a hug and cheek kisses. “What are you doing here?”

“We could ask you the same,” Jessica said.

“I’m visiting my grandmother. I haven’t seen her since she went back to Moscow.” Lolita pushed the elevator button. “She’s in town for the grand opening of Nick’s Center.”

“Nick’s dead,” Jessica blurted out. Her heart seized up. She could hardly breath.

“What?” Lolita put a manicured hand to her mouth. “How?”

“Heart attack from Amber’s poisoned tea bags.” Jessica glared at Amber.

“That’s not true!” Amber’s mouth fell open.

Jessica knew she shouldn’t accuse her friend, but with so little sleep, she couldn’t control what came out of her mouth.

“Let’s go to my grandmother’s room and sit down. We need a drink.” The elevator opened and Lolita held her arm across the door. “After you.”

“Can you push seven?” Amber asked.

Jessica pushed seven.

Lolita shot her an odd look. “My grandmother is on the seventh floor.”

“So is my donor . . .” Amber pulled the envelope from her purse and removed a sticky note.
